Forgiveness
Firstly, I should probably apologize for such a late update. Between the new school year and just life in general, I've been tired and mostly uninspired, especially spiritually.
So, what I want to talk about is forgiveness. Raise your hand if you haven't done anything wrong in your entire life. Nobody? Yeah, me too. I've messed up a lot but thankfully, I have grace. We all do. The high price was paid and we have all been forgiven. As a Christian, you know that.
But there's a lot more to forgiveness than just God's side. He's forgiven us and others but we have to forgive, too. And that can be very hard to do. Someone did something, said something, that hurt you or someone you love. They caused pain and pain can lead to so much suffering. In short, not fun. Forgiveness is so hard because of that. But, as both Christian and human beings, we have to forgive because we are always going to get hurt, someone is always going to offend us. That's just how this world works.
We have forgive because God calls us to love people. "The second great commandment is this: "Love others in the same way you love yourself....'" (Mark 12:31) How can we love someone if we're holding grudges against them? We serve a God who paid a very high price so He could forgive not just you, but everyone from creation to the end of time. We didn't deserve it in the least but He did it anyway. Maybe you feel like this person doesn't deserve it. I get it. Pain sucks. But we can't let our emotions get in the way because as Matthew West said in his song, the prisoner that it really frees is you.
The second instance that requires forgiveness is forgiving yourself. This is the one I struggle with the most because I have insecurities and my brain like to pick at them all the time. One small mistake gets blown out of proportion and a big one sends me into a depressed state. I'll say the wrong thing or that sentence sounded way better in my head and then it all goes spiraling downwards. And of course, me being me, this happens frequently. All the bad just piles up inside of me until I'm emotionally paralyzed and spiritually falling apart. Forgiving myself is just so hard so I hold on to all this unnecessary pain and wallow until I finally give in and say, "it's okay." Anyone else have this problem?
Self-forgiveness is so important because without it, we end up holding ourselves back from so much. We live in pointless guilt and it's so self destructive.
This is why I wanted to talk about forgiveness. Grace is one of the most powerful weapons on our side. It's there to unite us. It's there because without it, there would be no peace in this world. It's there because someone loved us enough that He decided that we were worth the cost. Healing takes time, forgiving someone can take time, but we can't let grudges and pain hold us back. It's a hard step to take but I believe that it's worth it.
