Freedom
So, for the past couple days, we’ve been pet-sitting for a friend. The animal? None other than a bunny rabbit. A word of advice: Don’t get a rabbit as a pet. Though cute, it is quite useless.
Our house isn’t the most ideal for a rabbit. The wood floors cause him to slide around. He is also shy so even getting him out on the blankets we set out causes him to be cautious. Needless to stay, he either stays in his cage or his tunnel. Me being me, I started thinking. Why is it that when he has room to roam around he chooses to hide in a dark tunnel?
Sometimes I think Christians are the same way. I know I am. Before we were born again, we were in a cage. Let’s call it the cage of sin. When we got saved, that cage was opened. We were set free. And it was great. We stepped out and it was amazing. But not amazing enough to keep us out of that cage. It’s hard to resist temptation sometimes, I get it. We need to learn to guard against it though. The cage just feels safer sometimes. It’s human nature to follow and listen to desires and what we want. God has called us to something higher, something greater than ourselves and as scary as that is, venturing outside the cage is feeing and will help you connect with Him.
Now we address the tunnel, our save haven. This could be anything. Church, home, in someone’s company. It’s that safe place we revert to when things aren’t working like they should be. The tunnel is also a place inside yourself. For example, when I’m in a prayer meeting at my church, I tend not to speak. I let my thoughts have their way and end up talking myself out of it. Why? Fear. As weird as it is, it’s my safe place. It’s my excuse. Tunnels are our escape, it’s an excuse not to do something. Like that rabbit, we like our tunnels. We like our escape routes.
We have been called to live in freedom. It’s a generous gift and it’s our duty as Christians to live in it. Be brave. Don’t revert to the cages and tunnels in your life. Live as you’ve been called.
